MRPC stands for Model Rules of Professional Conduct, a legal profession abbreviation.
Ethics rules for lawyers drafted by the American Bar Association in 1983, covering the client-lawyer relationship, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, candor to the tribunal, advertising and misconduct. Every US state has adopted rules based on them, sometimes with significant variations.
Example: Under MRPC 1.6, a lawyer may not reveal client information except in narrow circumstances.
Usage notes
The Model Rules replaced the 1969 Model Code of Professional Responsibility, and California became the last state to adopt rules based on them in 2018. The ABA issues formal ethics opinions interpreting them, such as Opinion 512 (2024) on generative AI. They bind lawyers only once a state's highest court adopts them.
