MCLE stands for Mandatory continuing legal education, a legal profession abbreviation.

Rules requiring lawyers to complete a set number of continuing legal education hours to keep practicing, and the state programs that administer them. MCLE rules specify required subjects, approved providers, reporting deadlines and penalties for noncompliance.

Example: The State Bar suspended 200 lawyers for failing to report their MCLE compliance on time.

Usage notes

California's MCLE rules require hours in legal ethics, competence issues such as substance use and mental health, and elimination of bias, among other subjects. Lawyers who miss deadlines usually face late fees and can be placed on inactive or suspended status. Many states grant credit for teaching, writing and pro bono work.
