1. Mean time to repair
Science & Engineering · Engineering Abbreviations
Average time needed to restore failed equipment to working order, including diagnosis, repair and testing. Together with MTBF, MTTR determines a system's availability, and maintenance teams work to shorten it through spare parts, training and modular design.
Example: Keeping spare drive modules on site cut the conveyor's MTTR from six hours to 45 minutes.
In IT operations MTTR may instead mean mean time to recovery, restore or respond, so definitions should be stated. Reducing MTTR often improves availability more cheaply than increasing MTBF.
2. Mean time to recovery
Technology & Computing · Cloud Computing Abbreviations
The average time it takes to restore a service after a failure or incident, from detection to full recovery. It is a core reliability and DevOps metric, and lower is better.
Example: Automated rollbacks cut our MTTR from 90 minutes to under 15.
The R is also expanded as repair, resolve or respond, so teams should state which they measure. DORA research tracks a similar failed-deployment recovery time. Related measures include mean time between failures (MTBF) and mean time to detect (MTTD).
