1. National Pipe Thread
Science & Engineering · Engineering Abbreviations · also used in measurement
US standard for tapered threads on pipes and fittings, in which the threads seal as they are tightened because the diameter changes by 1 in 16 along the length. NPT threads appear on plumbing, gas lines, hydraulic and pneumatic fittings.
Example: The pressure gauge has a 1/4-inch NPT connection; use thread sealant or PTFE tape.
Defined in ASME B1.20.1. Because ordinary NPT threads leave a small spiral leak path, sealant or tape is needed, while NPTF ("dryseal") threads seal by metal contact. British Standard Pipe (BSP) threads, used in Europe and Asia, have different angles and pitches and are not interchangeable with NPT.
2. Nepal Time
Units & Measurements · Time Zone Abbreviations
One of the very few time zones with a 45-minute offset, UTC+5:45, used throughout Nepal. Kathmandu's clocks are 15 minutes ahead of India's.
Example: The Kathmandu flight lands at 14:10 NPT, so set your watch 15 minutes ahead of Delhi time.
Nepal adopted UTC+5:45 in 1986, roughly matching the meridian of Mount Gauri Shankar east of Kathmandu, after previously using UTC+5:30. New Zealand's Chatham Islands (UTC+12:45) also use a 45-minute offset. In plumbing, NPT means National Pipe Thread.
