1. Nondestructive testing

Science & Engineering · Engineering Abbreviations

Inspection methods that find cracks, voids, corrosion and other flaws in materials and structures without damaging them. Main methods include ultrasonic (UT), radiographic (RT), magnetic particle (MT), liquid penetrant (PT), eddy current (ET) and visual (VT) testing.

Example: NDT of the pipeline welds found two lack-of-fusion defects that had to be ground out and rewelded.

NDT is essential in aerospace, power plants, pipelines, bridges and pressure vessels. Also called nondestructive examination (NDE) or evaluation. Inspectors are commonly certified to Levels I, II and III under schemes such as ASNT's SNT-TC-1A or ISO 9712.

2. Neurodevelopmental treatment

Medical · Rehabilitation Abbreviations

Hands-on therapy approach for people with neurological conditions such as stroke and cerebral palsy, focusing on posture, movement control and functional tasks. Also known as the Bobath concept.

Example: NDT handling for weight shift onto L hemibody during sit to stand.

Developed by physiotherapist Berta Bobath and neurologist Karel Bobath in London from the 1940s. Its methods have evolved toward task-oriented practice. Research comparing NDT with other approaches has not shown clear superiority.

3. Newfoundland Daylight Time

Units & Measurements · Time Zone Abbreviations

Newfoundland's summer time, UTC−2:30, observed from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. It makes St. John's the first major North American city to reach each new hour.

Example: The Royal St. John's Regatta starts at 8:00 a.m. NDT, weather permitting.

In 1988 the province experimented for one summer with "double daylight time", two hours ahead of standard time, before abandoning it. During NDT, Newfoundland is only 3.5 hours behind London, which makes it a convenient base for transatlantic communications, as it was for early telegraph cables.
