1. Vermont

Geography & Places · US State Abbreviations

An independent republic for 14 years, Vermont joined the Union on March 4, 1791, as the 14th state, the first after the original 13. Montpelier is the least populous state capital, and the Green Mountain State is the leading US producer of maple syrup.

Example: Maple syrup orders from Burlington, VT ship within two business days.

Vt., the AP and traditional abbreviation, uses the same letters as the code assigned in 1963 from the first and last letters of the name. The name is usually explained as French vert mont, green mountain. VT can also mean Virginia Tech in sports and ventricular tachycardia in medicine.

2. Ventricular tachycardia

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Fast rhythm originating in the ventricles, defined as three or more consecutive ventricular beats at over 100 beats per minute, with wide QRS complexes on the ECG. Sustained VT lasting more than 30 seconds or causing instability can degenerate into ventricular fibrillation and cardiac arrest.

Example: Telemetry alarm: 18-beat run of VT at 190 bpm, patient asymptomatic; potassium and magnesium rechecked.

Spoken as "V-tach" and sometimes written VTach. Most VT occurs in hearts scarred by prior infarction; monomorphic VT has uniform complexes, while polymorphic VT varies beat to beat, as in torsades de pointes. Pulseless VT is treated like VF with immediate defibrillation, whereas stable VT may receive antiarrhythmics or synchronized cardioversion. In respiratory care "Vt" with a lowercase t means tidal volume.

3. Verb, transitive (vt.)

Writing & Everyday · Grammar and Dictionary Abbreviations

Labels a verb that takes a direct object, such as "bring" or "describe," which need something to act on. Dictionaries use it to separate transitive senses from intransitive ones of the same verb.

Example: grow vt. to cultivate plants, as in "they grow tomatoes"; vi. to increase in size

Variants include v.t., tr. and "transitive verb" spelled out, the form Merriam-Webster uses. Many verbs, like "eat," are both transitive and intransitive, so the senses are listed separately. Learner's dictionaries often use the codes [T] and [I] instead. Transitivity explains why "raise" needs an object ("raised the flag") while "rise" does not.

4. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

Education & Academia · University Abbreviations

Virginia Tech, a public land-grant university in Blacksburg founded in 1872, known for engineering, architecture, agriculture and its Corps of Cadets. Its Hokies compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Example: He studies aerospace engineering at VT and is a member of the Corps of Cadets.

The university brands itself "Virginia Tech". The word "Hokie" comes from a cheer written in 1896. VT is also the postal code for Vermont, so sports writers usually say Virginia Tech in full.

5. Tidal volume (Vt)

Medical · Respiratory Abbreviations

Volume of air moved into or out of the lungs with each normal breath, about 500 mL (roughly 7 mL/kg) in a resting adult. On ventilators, the set tidal volume is a central setting for lung-protective ventilation.

Example: Vt set at 6 mL/kg PBW (390 mL) for ARDS; plateau pressure 27.

The ARDS Network trial (2000) showed that ventilating with 6 mL/kg of predicted body weight instead of 12 mL/kg reduced mortality from about 40 to 31 percent. Predicted body weight is calculated from height and sex, not actual weight, so obese patients do not receive excessive volumes. Also written VT or TV; the lowercase t distinguishes it from VT, ventricular tachycardia.
