1. Ventricular fibrillation
Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations
Chaotic, disorganized ventricular electrical activity that produces no effective heartbeat or pulse, causing cardiac arrest within seconds. Survival depends on prompt CPR and defibrillation and falls with every minute of delay, which is why public-access AEDs are placed in airports, gyms and schools.
Example: Witnessed collapse in the gym; the AED analyzed VF and delivered one shock with return of pulse.
Spoken as "V-fib" and also written VFib. VF and pulseless VT are the two "shockable" arrest rhythms in ACLS algorithms, unlike asystole and pulseless electrical activity. Coarse VF has larger waves and responds better to shocks than fine VF, which can resemble asystole. Survivors without a reversible cause usually receive an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.
2. Visual field
Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations
Full extent of what a person can see, including peripheral vision, while looking straight ahead. Automated perimetry maps the field to detect and follow glaucoma, optic nerve disease and brain lesions affecting vision.
Example: Humphrey VF 24-2 OD: superior arcuate defect, consistent with glaucoma.
Common automated tests use the Humphrey analyzer with 24-2, 30-2 or 10-2 patterns; bedside confrontation testing gives a rough screen. Pituitary tumors classically cause loss of the outer halves of both fields (bitemporal hemianopia). In cardiology VF means ventricular fibrillation.
