Class of drugs injected into the eye that block VEGF, a protein driving abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage. They treat wet AMD, diabetic macular edema, retinal vein occlusion and retinopathy of prematurity.
Example: Anti-VEGF (faricimab) OD every 12 weeks, retina dry on OCT.
Usage notes
Agents include bevacizumab (used off-label), ranibizumab, aflibercept, brolucizumab and faricimab, which also blocks angiopoietin-2. Injections are given in the office with topical anesthesia. Infection inside the eye (endophthalmitis) is rare but serious. These drugs account for a large share of Medicare Part B drug spending.
