1. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport

Transportation & Travel · Airport Code Abbreviations

Mumbai's main airport and one of India's busiest, located in the suburbs of Santacruz and Sahar. It handles enormous traffic on what is effectively a single runway at a time.

Example: Leave three hours for BOM security during Diwali week; the queues are huge.

ICAO code VABB. Named for the 17th-century Maratha king Shivaji. The two crossing runways cannot be used simultaneously, making it one of the world's busiest single-runway operations. Terminal 2, opened in 2014, features peacock-inspired design and a long art wall. The code comes from Bombay, the city's former English name.

2. Bill of materials

Science & Engineering · Engineering Abbreviations · also used in business

Structured list of every part, subassembly, raw material and quantity needed to build a product, often arranged in levels that mirror the assembly. The BOM links engineering, purchasing and production and drives cost estimates and material planning.

Example: The BOM for the controller lists 312 line items, including 48 different resistor values.

Companies often maintain an engineering BOM (EBOM), reflecting the design, and a manufacturing BOM (MBOM), organized by how the product is built. Errors in the BOM are a common cause of production delays. In software supply chains, an SBOM lists the components of a software product.

3. Bilateral otitis media

Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations

Chart shorthand for otitis media affecting both ears at the same time, usually meaning acute infection in both middle ears. Bilateral disease influences treatment decisions in young children.

Example: BOM with bulging TMs both sides, age 14 months; start amoxicillin.

Under AAP guidance, children under two with bilateral acute otitis media should receive antibiotics even if symptoms are not severe, because they are less likely to improve on their own. Unilateral disease is sometimes written ROM or LOM, which can be confused with other abbreviations such as range of motion.

4. Byte order mark

Technology & Computing · Computer Abbreviations

Invisible Unicode character, U+FEFF, placed at the very start of a text file to signal the encoding and, for UTF-16 and UTF-32, the byte order. In UTF-8 it appears as the three bytes EF BB BF.

Example: The script failed because the config file began with a BOM, so the parser saw three stray bytes.

A UTF-8 BOM is optional and often unwanted: Unix tools and many parsers treat it as junk, and it can show up as "" at the start of a line. Windows Notepad historically added one when saving as UTF-8, while Excel relies on it to recognize UTF-8 CSV files. In manufacturing and business, BOM usually means bill of materials.
