AHU stands for Air handling unit, an engineering abbreviation.
Large HVAC component that conditions and circulates air for a building, typically a metal cabinet containing a fan, filters, heating and cooling coils, dampers and sometimes humidifiers and heat recovery. AHUs connect to ductwork that distributes air to rooms.
Example: The AHU on the third floor supplies 20,000 cubic feet per minute to the office zones.
Usage notes
Larger buildings use central AHUs supplied with chilled and hot water from a central plant, while smaller ones use packaged rooftop units. Dedicated outdoor air systems use specialized AHUs to supply only ventilation air. Filter changes and coil cleaning are routine AHU maintenance.
