1. Range of motion

Medical · Rehabilitation Abbreviations · also used in sports

Extent of movement possible at a joint, measured in degrees with a goniometer or estimated visually, and described for each motion such as flexion or abduction. It guides diagnosis, treatment and progress in orthopedic and neurological rehabilitation.

Example: R knee ROM 5 to 95 degrees flexion, goal 0 to 120 by week 6.

Measured as active (AROM), active-assisted (AAROM) or passive (PROM). Normal values vary by joint, age and individual; for example knee flexion typically reaches about 135 degrees or more. In obstetrics ROM means rupture of membranes, so context separates the two.

2. Read-only memory

Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations

Non-volatile memory whose contents are written at manufacture or rarely changed, used to hold firmware such as a computer's BIOS, a game cartridge's code or a device's boot code. Data survives without power.

Example: Early home computers like the Commodore 64 stored BASIC in ROM, so it was ready the moment you switched on.

True mask ROM is fixed when the chip is made; later types, such as EPROM, EEPROM and flash, can be rewritten, though firmware stored in them is still loosely called ROM. Chinese phone listings often misuse ROM to mean internal storage, as in "8 GB RAM + 256 GB ROM". In emulation and Android modding, a ROM is a file image of such memory.

3. Rupture of membranes

Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations

Breaking of the amniotic sac, commonly called the water breaking, which normally occurs during labor. Clinicians document the time, color and amount of fluid, because prolonged rupture increases infection risk and meconium staining may signal fetal stress.

Example: ROM at 0230, clear fluid; 12 hours ruptured, afebrile, continue oxytocin.

Rupture is confirmed with a sterile speculum exam showing pooling of fluid, a positive nitrazine or fern test, or protein-based tests. In rehabilitation and orthopedics ROM means range of motion, a far more frequent use in general notes. Prefixes describe the type: SROM, AROM, PROM and PPROM.

4. Romans (Rom.)

Religion · Bible Book Abbreviations

Paul's longest letter, 16 chapters, written around AD 57 to Christians in Rome, setting out his theology of sin, grace and justification by faith. Verses such as "all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (3:23) form the "Romans Road" used in evangelism.

Example: Augustine's conversion followed his reading of Rom. 13:13–14.

All three citation systems use Rom, with Chicago's traditional style adding a period. Martin Luther's study of Romans helped spark the Protestant Reformation, and John Wesley felt his heart "strangely warmed" while hearing Luther's preface to it. It is placed first among Paul's letters because it is the longest.

5. ROM image

Technology & Computing · Software Abbreviations

File containing a copy of the data from a read-only memory chip, such as a video-game cartridge or a device's firmware. Emulator users load game ROMs, and Android enthusiasts install "custom ROMs" that replace a phone's stock operating system.

Example: I flashed LineageOS, a custom ROM, to keep my old phone getting security updates.

Distributing copyrighted game ROMs without permission is illegal in most countries, even for games no longer sold, and Nintendo has sued several ROM sites. Custom Android ROMs such as LineageOS, the successor to CyanogenMod, require an unlocked bootloader. In hardware, ROM means read-only memory, the chip type the name comes from.

6. Rough order of magnitude

Business & Finance · Project Management Abbreviations

Very early, high-level estimate of a project's cost or duration, made before detailed requirements exist, used to decide whether an idea is worth pursuing.

Example: The ROM for the new data center is $8 to $15 million.

PMI's guidance describes an accuracy range of about -25% to +75% for a ROM estimate. Estimates are refined into budget and definitive estimates as the project progresses.

7. Roman (type) (rom)

Writing & Everyday · Proofreading and Correction Mark Abbreviations

Tells a typesetter to set text in roman, the ordinary upright typeface, usually to correct words wrongly set in italic or bold. Editors circle the text and write rom in the margin.

Example: The comma after the italic title should be rom, so the editor circled it and noted the change.

Roman type descends from letterforms used by Renaissance printers in Italy, such as Nicolas Jenson in Venice in the 1470s. Chicago style sets punctuation in the font of the surrounding text, so a comma following an italic title stays roman. Scientific names follow a similar rule: the genus is italic, but the author's name after it is roman.
