RISC-V stands for RISC-V (open instruction set architecture), a computer hardware abbreviation.

Free, open-standard instruction set architecture that anyone can implement without paying royalties, used in microcontrollers, storage controllers, AI accelerators and increasingly in application processors. It is governed by RISC-V International.

Example: The SSD controller and the Wi-Fi chip both contain small RISC-V cores.

Usage notes

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, began the project in 2010; it is the fifth RISC design from Berkeley, hence the Roman numeral V, pronounced "risk-five". RISC-V International moved its headquarters to Switzerland in 2020 to reassure members about neutrality. Its modular design lets chipmakers add only the extensions they need, such as vector or compressed instructions.
