CategoriesMedical

SROM stands for Spontaneous rupture of membranes, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.

Natural breaking of the amniotic sac without medical intervention, before or during labor. Labor notes record the time of SROM and the fluid's color, such as clear, bloody or meconium-stained.

Example: SROM at 1845 with moderate meconium-stained fluid; continuous fetal monitoring.

Usage notes

SROM contrasts with AROM, in which a clinician deliberately breaks the membranes. Meconium in the fluid is common after term and prompts pediatric attendance at delivery in some hospitals. A sudden gush followed by fetal heart changes can signal cord prolapse.
