AMH stands for Anti-Müllerian hormone, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Hormone produced by small growing follicles in the ovary, measured in blood as a marker of ovarian reserve. It predicts how many eggs are likely to be retrieved in IVF but does not reliably predict natural fertility in the general population.
Example: AMH 0.6 ng/mL at 36; expect lower response to stimulation, discuss IVF timeline.
Usage notes
AMH can be measured on any day of the cycle, unlike FSH. A 2017 study in JAMA found low AMH did not reduce the chance of natural conception over a year. Levels are often high in PCOS. The hormone is named for its role in regression of the Müllerian ducts in male fetuses.
