FSH stands for Follicle-stimulating hormone, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.
Gonadotropin that stimulates ovarian follicle growth in women and sperm production in men. High FSH indicates the gonads are failing, as in menopause or primary ovarian insufficiency, while low levels point to pituitary or hypothalamic problems.
Example: Amenorrhea 8 months, FSH 68 on two occasions at age 36: primary ovarian insufficiency.
Usage notes
Fertility clinics measure early-cycle (day 3) FSH and estradiol to assess ovarian reserve, though AMH has largely taken that role. Recombinant FSH injections drive ovarian stimulation in IVF. Menopause can usually be diagnosed clinically without FSH testing in women over 45.
