Stands forGlucose management indicator
CategoriesMedical

GMI stands for Glucose management indicator, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.

Estimate of the A1C expected from a person's average CGM glucose over at least 14 days, calculated with a standard formula. It helps explain mismatches between laboratory A1C and day-to-day glucose readings.

Example: GMI 7.4 percent but lab A1C 8.3; consider anemia or other causes of discordance.

Usage notes

Introduced in 2018 to replace the term "estimated A1C", because the two values often differ for biological reasons such as red cell lifespan. Kidney disease, anemia, pregnancy and hemoglobin variants commonly produce discordance. Pronounced as letters.
