IDDM stands for Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.
Former name for type 1 diabetes, introduced in a 1979 classification and used through the 1990s. It described patients who depended on insulin injections to prevent ketoacidosis and survive.
Example: Problem list carried over from 1994 chart: IDDM since age 9.
Usage notes
The American Diabetes Association expert committee dropped IDDM and NIDDM in 1997 because the labels described treatment rather than cause and were confusing: many people with type 2 diabetes use insulin without being "insulin-dependent". The terms survive in older records and some insurance forms.
