IGF-1 stands for Insulin-like growth factor 1, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.

Hormone produced mainly in the liver in response to growth hormone, which mediates many of GH's growth effects. Because its level is stable through the day, it is the best screening test for acromegaly and a useful marker of GH deficiency and treatment dosing.

Example: IGF-1 above age-matched range with coarse features; pituitary MRI shows macroadenoma.

Usage notes

Results must be compared with age- and sex-specific ranges, since levels peak in puberty and fall with age. Malnutrition, liver disease and poorly controlled diabetes lower IGF-1. Also called somatomedin C. Mecasermin, recombinant IGF-1, treats rare primary IGF-1 deficiency.
