IGT stands for Impaired glucose tolerance, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.
Prediabetes category defined by a 2-hour glucose of 140–199 mg/dL on a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test. People with IGT have higher risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular events than people with normal tolerance.
Example: OGTT: fasting 96, 2-hour 168 mg/dL, consistent with IGT.
Usage notes
IGT can only be identified with a glucose tolerance test, so it is missed by fasting glucose and A1C screening. It was the entry criterion of the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program trial. Pronounced as letters; "prediabetes" is the patient-friendly umbrella term for IGT, IFG and A1C of 5.7–6.4 percent.
