NIDDM stands for Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.
Former name for type 2 diabetes, used from 1979 until 1997, describing patients who did not require insulin to prevent ketoacidosis. It appears in older medical records, research papers and some coding descriptions.
Example: Old discharge summary lists NIDDM on glyburide, now documented as T2DM.
Usage notes
The label became misleading as more people with type 2 diabetes started insulin, leading to the confusing phrase "insulin-requiring NIDDM". The 1997 ADA classification replaced both IDDM and NIDDM with type 1 and type 2. Pronounced as letters.
