1. Americans with Disabilities Act

Government & Politics · US Law Abbreviations

Civil rights law of 1990 that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, state and local government services, public accommodations, transportation and telecommunications. Employers with 15 or more workers must provide reasonable accommodations, and businesses open to the public must remove accessibility barriers where readily achievable.

Example: The restaurant added a ramp and accessible restroom to comply with the ADA.

President George H. W. Bush signed it on July 26, 1990. Employment claims go to the EEOC, while the Justice Department enforces the public accommodations and government provisions. Court rulings narrowed the definition of disability until the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 restored broad coverage. The ADA Standards for Accessible Design set technical rules for ramps, doors and restrooms.

2. American Dental Association

Organizations & Companies · Professional Association and Labor Union Abbreviations

Largest professional association of dentists in the United States, which sets ethical standards, publishes research and awards the ADA Seal of Acceptance to toothpastes, toothbrushes and other dental products that meet its criteria.

Example: The toothpaste carries the ADA Seal of Acceptance for cavity prevention.

Founded in 1859 in Niagara Falls, New York, it has more than 150,000 members. Its Seal program began in 1931. It also maintains the CDT codes used for dental billing and publishes The Journal of the American Dental Association. In US law, ADA usually means the Americans with Disabilities Act.

3. Assistant district attorney

Law & Legal · Court Abbreviations

Line prosecutor working under an elected district attorney, handling arraignments, grand jury presentations, hearings and trials in state criminal court. Large offices assign ADAs to specialized bureaus such as homicide, sex crimes, narcotics or appeals.

Example: The ADA asked for bail of $50,000, citing the defendant's two prior failures to appear.

In courtrooms ADA nearly always means a prosecutor; in employment and accessibility contexts it means the Americans with Disabilities Act, and in dentistry the American Dental Association. Some offices use "deputy district attorney" (DDA) or "assistant state's attorney" (ASA) instead. New prosecutors usually start in misdemeanor courts before moving to felonies.

4. American Diabetes Association

Organizations & Companies · Nonprofit Abbreviations

National health organization that funds diabetes research, advocates for people with diabetes and publishes the annual Standards of Care in Diabetes used by clinicians.

Example: Her doctor follows the ADA Standards of Care when adjusting her treatment.

Founded in 1940 by physicians, it publishes the journals Diabetes and Diabetes Care. Its advocacy helped secure civil rights protections for people with diabetes at work and school. In law, ADA usually means the Americans with Disabilities Act, and in dentistry the American Dental Association.

5. Average daily attendance

Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations

Measure of the average number of students attending school each day over a period, used by California, Texas and some other states as the basis for school funding. Districts therefore lose money when students are absent, even with excused absences.

Example: Each percentage point of ADA is worth about $600,000 to the district's budget.

Funding based on attendance rather than enrollment gives districts a financial incentive to reduce chronic absenteeism. Critics argue it penalizes districts serving students with health problems or unstable housing. In law and civil rights, ADA means the Americans with Disabilities Act.

6. Anti-drug antibodies

Medical · Pharmacology Abbreviations

Antibodies a patient's immune system makes against a biologic medicine, such as infliximab or adalimumab, which can speed drug clearance, reduce response and trigger infusion reactions. Testing for ADAs is part of therapeutic drug monitoring for biologics.

Example: Infliximab trough undetectable with high ADA titer; switch to another class.

Adding an immunomodulator such as methotrexate or azathioprine lowers the risk of ADA formation with anti-TNF drugs. Immunogenicity is assessed in all biologic and biosimilar approvals. ADA more commonly stands for the American Diabetes Association, the American Dental Association or the Americans with Disabilities Act.

7. Cardano

Technology & Computing · Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Abbreviations

The native cryptocurrency of Cardano, a proof-of-stake blockchain founded by Ethereum co-founder Charles Hoskinson and developed with an emphasis on peer-reviewed academic research. ADA is used for fees and staking.

Example: He delegates his ADA to a stake pool and earns rewards every five-day epoch.

The coin is named after Ada Lovelace, the 19th-century mathematician often called the first computer programmer, and its smallest unit is the lovelace. Cardano launched in 2017, and smart contracts arrived with the Alonzo upgrade in 2021. In other contexts ADA means the Americans with Disabilities Act or the American Dental Association.
