ADEA stands for Age Discrimination in Employment Act, a US law abbreviation.
Law of 1967 that protects workers and job applicants aged 40 and older from discrimination in hiring, firing, pay, promotion and other terms of employment. It applies to employers with 20 or more employees and is enforced by the EEOC.
Example: Her severance agreement included the ADEA waiver language and a 21-day review period.
Usage notes
There is no upper age limit on protection. The Older Workers Benefit Protection Act of 1990 added requirements for valid waivers, such as giving employees 21 days to consider and 7 days to revoke a release, or 45 days in group layoffs. Mandatory retirement was largely abolished by 1986 amendments.
