Usage notes

Founded in Wisconsin in 1932 and chartered by the AFL in 1936, it represented the Memphis sanitation workers whose 1968 strike, with its "I Am a Man" signs, brought Martin Luther King Jr. to the city where he was assassinated. The Supreme Court's 2018 Janus v. AFSCME decision ended mandatory fees for public-sector workers who do not join. It is pronounced "AFS-mee".
