Usage notes
It was formed in 1955 by merging the AFL, founded in 1886 under Samuel Gompers and organized mainly by craft, with the CIO, which organized whole industries from the 1930s. Several large unions left in 2005 to form Change to Win, and some, including SEIU in 2025, later returned. Its first president was George Meany.
