Founded in Chicago in 1921 as the Building Service Employees International Union, it grew rapidly from the 1980s through organizing low-wage service workers. It backed the "Fight for $15" campaign for fast-food workers from 2012. It left the AFL-CIO in 2005 and rejoined in January 2025.
