1. Private mortgage insurance

Business & Finance · Real Estate & Mortgage Abbreviations

Insurance that conventional mortgage lenders require when the down payment is below 20% of the home's value, protecting the lender, not the borrower, if the loan defaults. The borrower usually pays it as a monthly add-on to the mortgage payment.

Example: Putting 10% down means we'll pay PMI until we reach 20% equity.

Under the Homeowners Protection Act of 1998, borrowers can ask to cancel PMI once the balance falls to 80% of the original home value, and it must end automatically at 78%. Cost depends on credit score and down payment. FHA loans use a different charge called MIP, and VA loans have no monthly mortgage insurance. In project management, PMI is the Project Management Institute.

2. Project Management Institute

Organizations & Companies · Professional Association and Labor Union Abbreviations · also used in business and education

Global professional organization for project management, which administers the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and publishes A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide).

Example: He earned his PMI certification after passing the PMP exam.

Founded in 1969 and headquartered in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, it has chapters in many countries. The PMP is one of the most widely held project management credentials, and the PMBOK Guide has gone through several editions. In finance, PMI means private mortgage insurance, and in economics a purchasing managers' index.

3. Purchasing Managers' Index

Business & Finance · Economics Abbreviations

Monthly economic indicator based on surveys of purchasing managers about new orders, output, employment, supplier deliveries and inventories. A reading above 50 signals expansion compared with the previous month and below 50 contraction.

Example: The manufacturing PMI fell to 47.8, its third straight month in contraction territory.

In the US, the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) publishes the best-known PMIs, while S&P Global compiles PMIs for dozens of countries. Because they come out early in the month, PMIs are among the first signals of economic turning points. In real estate, PMI means private mortgage insurance.

4. Palma de Mallorca Airport

Transportation & Travel · Airport Code Abbreviations

Airport of the Spanish island of Mallorca, located about 8 kilometers east of Palma and among the busiest airports in Spain during the summer peak. Most traffic is holiday flights from Germany and the UK.

Example: Hundreds of flights an hour pour into PMI on a summer Saturday from all over Europe.

ICAO code LEPA. Also called Son Sant Joan. Its summer traffic is so seasonal that it ranks near the top of Spain's airports in July and August but far lower in winter. German tourists have made Mallorca famously popular, sometimes nicknamed Germany's "17th state."

5. Point of maximal impulse

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Spot on the chest wall where the heartbeat is felt most strongly, normally in the fifth intercostal space at the midclavicular line and no larger than a coin. A displaced or enlarged impulse suggests an enlarged left ventricle.

Example: PMI laterally displaced to the anterior axillary line and sustained, consistent with LV dilation.

Also called the apical impulse or apex beat, the term preferred in British texts. A sustained, heaving impulse suggests pressure overload such as aortic stenosis, while a displaced, diffuse impulse suggests volume overload or dilated cardiomyopathy. The PMI may be hard to feel in people with obesity or COPD. Outside medicine PMI often means the Project Management Institute.
