MODY stands for Maturity-onset diabetes of the young, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.

Group of inherited, single-gene forms of diabetes passed in an autosomal dominant pattern, usually appearing before age 25 in people without obesity or autoimmunity. The most common types involve the GCK, HNF1A and HNF4A genes, and correct diagnosis can change treatment.

Example: Three generations with early diabetes, antibodies negative; genetic testing confirms HNF1A MODY.

Usage notes

Pronounced "MOH-dee". The name dates from the 1970s, when it was seen as type 2 diabetes appearing in youth. GCK-MODY causes mild, stable fasting hyperglycemia that usually needs no treatment, while HNF1A-MODY responds well to low-dose sulfonylureas, often allowing patients to stop insulin. Monogenic forms account for roughly 1–2 percent of diabetes.
