CGM stands for Continuous glucose monitor, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.

Wearable sensor inserted under the skin that measures interstitial glucose every few minutes and sends readings to a receiver, phone or insulin pump. Alarms warn of highs and lows, and reports summarize time in range and glucose patterns.

Example: CGM 14-day report: time in range 68 percent, below range 3 percent; adjust basal rate overnight.

Usage notes

Widely used systems include Dexcom and FreeStyle Libre. Interstitial readings lag blood glucose by several minutes, which matters when glucose is changing fast. In 2024 the FDA cleared the first over-the-counter CGMs for adults not using insulin. Certain drugs, such as high-dose vitamin C or acetaminophen with older sensors, can interfere with readings.
