1. Cesarean section
Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations
Abbreviation for cesarean delivery widely used in international research, WHO publications and British and Commonwealth clinical notes, as in "CS rate" or "emergency CS". It describes the same operation as C-section.
Example: Emergency CS (category 1) for prolonged fetal bradycardia; delivered within 25 minutes.
The WHO recommends the Robson Ten-Group Classification for comparing CS rates between hospitals and countries. UK practice grades urgency from category 1 (immediate threat to life) to category 4 (elective). In US medical notes "C/S" is also common. In endocrinology CS means Cushing's syndrome.
2. Computer science
Technology & Computing · Computer Abbreviations
Academic discipline that studies computation, algorithms, data structures, programming languages, software design, artificial intelligence and the theoretical limits of what computers can do. It ranks among the most popular university majors in the United States.
Example: He's a CS major taking algorithms, operating systems and machine learning this semester.
Purdue University opened the first US computer science department in 1962. The ACM's Turing Award, often described as the Nobel Prize of computing, is the field's top honor. British students often shorten it to "CompSci". Outside academia, CS also means customer service.
3. Clean sheet
Sports · Soccer (Association Football) Abbreviations
Match in which a team concedes no goals, credited to the goalkeeper and often the defenders. The Premier League's Golden Glove goes to the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets.
Example: Fantasy tip: back defenders from the home side for a likely CS this weekend.
Petr Cech holds the Premier League career record with 202 clean sheets. The term comes from the idea of a sheet of paper with no goals written on it. Americans also say "shutout". In baseball statistics CS means caught stealing.
4. Cushing's syndrome
Medical · Endocrinology & Diabetes Abbreviations
Condition caused by prolonged excess cortisol, producing weight gain in the face and trunk, purple stretch marks, easy bruising, muscle weakness, high blood pressure and diabetes. The most common cause is long-term glucocorticoid medication; endogenous causes include pituitary and adrenal tumors.
Example: Suspected CS: late-night salivary cortisol elevated twice, 1 mg DST cortisol 6.2.
Cushing's disease, a narrower term, refers specifically to an ACTH-secreting pituitary adenoma, the most common endogenous cause; both are named after neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing. Screening tests include late-night salivary cortisol, 24-hour urine free cortisol and the overnight dexamethasone test. In obstetrics CS often means cesarean section.
5. Cesium (Cs)
Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations
Cesium, atomic number 55, is a soft, gold-tinged alkali metal that melts at about 28.5 °C and explodes on contact with water. It defines time: since 1967 the SI second has been 9,192,631,770 oscillations of radiation from the cesium-133 atom. Radioactive cesium-137 is a major contaminant after nuclear accidents.
Example: The national time standard is a Cs fountain clock that would drift less than a second in 100 million years.
Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff discovered cesium in 1860 in mineral water from Dürkheim, the first element found by spectral analysis. They named it from Latin caesius (sky blue) for its two bright blue spectral lines. IUPAC spells it caesium, the usual British form, while American usage prefers cesium. Cesium formate brines are used in high-pressure oil and gas drilling.
6. Conditioned stimulus
Science & Engineering · Psychology Abbreviations
In classical conditioning, an originally neutral stimulus, such as a bell, that comes to trigger a response after being repeatedly paired with a stimulus that naturally produces that response, such as food.
Example: After repeated pairings, the tone became a CS that alone made the dogs salivate.
The terminology comes from Ivan Pavlov's research on dogs in the early 1900s; Pavlov received the 1904 Nobel Prize for earlier work on digestion. If the CS is repeatedly presented without the unconditioned stimulus, the learned response fades, a process called extinction. In computing CS means computer science.
7. Creep score
Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations
Number of minions (creeps) a player has killed in a MOBA, the main source of gold in lanes. High CS indicates good farming.
Example: Aim for at least 8 CS per minute in lane.
Professional League of Legends players often reach about 10 CS per minute. CS is a key early-game performance metric. CS also stands for Counter-Strike, the shooter series, which context separates.
8. Comma splice
Writing & Everyday · Proofreading and Correction Mark Abbreviations
Points to two independent clauses joined only by a comma, as in "The test was hard, I studied anyway." It is one of the most frequently flagged errors in student writing.
Example: CS: "My brother loves soccer, he practices every day" needs a semicolon or a conjunction.
Corrections include replacing the comma with a period or semicolon, adding a conjunction such as "but," or subordinating one clause ("Although the test was hard..."). Fiction writers sometimes use comma splices deliberately for short, closely linked clauses, as in the translation "I came, I saw, I conquered."
9. Culinary Specialist
Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations
Navy cooks and food-service managers who plan menus, prepare meals in ship galleys and shore dining facilities, manage provisions and run officers' and flag messes. Some serve in the White House Mess or as personal staff to senior officials.
Example: CS1 Moreno's team served 5,000 meals a day during the carrier's deployment.
The rating was called Mess Management Specialist (MS) until 2004. Submarine-qualified culinary specialists use the designation CSS. In technology, CS more often means computer science, and in customer service it means customer support, so the Navy meaning usually appears with a pay grade, as in CS2.
10. Caught stealing
Sports · Baseball Abbreviations
Out made when a runner trying to steal is tagged out, usually after the catcher's throw. Comparing SB with CS shows whether a runner's attempts are worthwhile.
Example: He's 31-for-34 on steals, with only 3 CS all season.
Analysts estimate a runner should succeed around 70 to 75 percent of the time for stealing to add value. Catchers are judged partly by caught-stealing rate. In soccer statistics CS means clean sheet.
11. Czechoslovakia
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
ISO code for Czechoslovakia until the country divided into Czechia (CZ) and Slovakia (SK) on January 1, 1993. The .cs domain was later deleted.

CS was later reused for Serbia and Montenegro, one of the few ISO codes assigned to two different countries.

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
ISO code for the state union of Serbia and Montenegro from 2003 until Montenegro's independence in 2006, after which Serbia received RS and Montenegro ME.
