1. Central Standard Time (North America)

Units & Measurements · Time Zone Abbreviations

Winter time of the central United States and Canada, six hours behind UTC, used from the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March. Saskatchewan, much of Mexico and several Central American countries keep UTC−6 all year.

Example: Doors open at 6:30 p.m. CST; the show begins at 7:30.

CST is one of the most ambiguous zone abbreviations: it also means China Standard Time (UTC+8), 14 hours ahead, and Cuba Standard Time (UTC−5). Adding a UTC offset or city avoids mistakes in international scheduling. In summer the US Central zone shifts to CDT, though many people still loosely say CST.

2. China Standard Time

Units & Measurements · Time Zone Abbreviations

The single official time for all of mainland China, UTC+8, used from Beijing to Xinjiang with no daylight saving. Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan keep the same offset under their own names.

Example: The Shanghai trading session opens at 9:30 a.m. CST, which is 01:30 UTC.

China has used one zone since 1949 despite spanning about five geographic time zones, so in far-western Xinjiang winter sunrise comes close to 10 a.m. by the clock and many residents unofficially use Xinjiang Time (UTC+6). China observed daylight saving from 1986 to 1991. Many sources write Beijing Time to avoid confusion with North American CST.

3. Certified Surgical Technologist

Medical · Healthcare Credential Abbreviations

Credential from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) for surgical technologists who complete an accredited program and pass its exam. CSTs prepare sterile instruments and assist surgeons during operations.

Example: CST scrubbed in for laparoscopic case and maintained instrument count.

Several states require surgical technologists to be certified or registered. Experienced CSTs may become Certified Surgical First Assistants (CSFA). Programs are accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES.

4. Contraction stress test

Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations

Test of fetal reserve in which the fetal heart rate is observed during at least three contractions in 10 minutes, induced by oxytocin or nipple stimulation if necessary. Late decelerations with half or more of contractions indicate a positive (abnormal) test.

Example: Nonreactive NST and equivocal BPP; CST negative, no late decelerations.

Also called the oxytocin challenge test. It has largely been replaced by the biophysical profile and Doppler studies because it is time-consuming and contraindicated in conditions such as placenta previa or prior classical cesarean. In surgery CST means certified surgical technologist.

5. Cuba Standard Time

Units & Measurements · Time Zone Abbreviations

Cuba's winter time, UTC−5, the same offset as US Eastern Standard Time, so Havana usually shows the same clock time as Miami. In summer Cuba moves to Cuba Daylight Time, UTC−4.

Example: The flight departs Havana at 4:15 p.m. CST and lands in Miami about an hour later.

Because three different zones share the letters CST, software and the IANA time zone database identify Cuba's zone as America/Havana instead. Cuba has sometimes changed its daylight saving dates at short notice, a known headache for calendar and phone software.

6. Child study team

Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations

New Jersey term for the school-district team, typically a school psychologist, learning disabilities teacher-consultant and school social worker, that evaluates students and manages special education cases. Other states use similar names for pre-referral or evaluation teams.

Example: The CST will contact you to schedule the initial identification meeting.

Each student with an IEP in New Jersey has a CST case manager. In some states, a child study team is a general education problem-solving group that meets before any special education referral. In California, the similar body is often called a student study team (SST).
