IANA stands for Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, a networking abbreviation.
The function that manages the DNS root zone, allocates IP address blocks and AS numbers to regional registries, and maintains registries of protocol parameters such as port numbers and media types. An ICANN affiliate called PTI operates it.
Example: Port 443 is registered with IANA for HTTPS, so pick an unassigned port for the new service.
Usage notes
For decades IANA was effectively run by one person, Jon Postel at the University of Southern California, until his death in 1998. It also hosts the time zone database, often called the tz or Olson database, which nearly every operating system uses. Pronounced "eye-ANN-uh".
