1. File Transfer Protocol
Technology & Computing · Networking Abbreviations
A long-standing protocol for uploading and downloading files between a client and a server, using separate connections for commands (port 21) and data. Web designers once used FTP clients such as FileZilla to publish sites to their hosting accounts.
Example: Upload the theme folder to the host via FTP, then clear the site cache.
First specified by Abhay Bhushan in RFC 114 in 1971, making it older than TCP/IP; the current standard is RFC 959 (1985). Plain FTP sends passwords and files unencrypted, so SFTP or FTPS should be used instead. Firefox and Chrome removed built-in FTP support in 2021. Active and passive modes differ in which side opens the data connection, a frequent cause of firewall trouble.
2. Functional threshold power
Sports · Fitness and Exercise Abbreviations
Highest average power, in watts, a cyclist can sustain for about one hour, used to set training zones on smart trainers and power meters. It is often estimated as 95 percent of a 20-minute maximal test.
Example: My FTP went up to 265 watts after the eight-week block on Zwift.
Popularized by Hunter Allen and Andrew Coggan in Training and Racing with a Power Meter (2006). Riders compare fitness using watts per kilogram (FTP divided by body weight). In computing FTP means File Transfer Protocol.
