HRV stands for Heart rate variability, a fitness and exercise abbreviation.
Variation in time between consecutive heartbeats, measured in milliseconds. Higher HRV generally indicates better recovery, and fitness wearables use it to suggest whether to train hard or rest.
Example: Low HRV and poor sleep meant my recovery score was in the red.
Usage notes
HRV is highly individual, so trends against a person's own baseline matter more than comparisons with others. Wearables such as WHOOP, Oura and Garmin popularized daily HRV tracking. Alcohol, illness and stress tend to lower it.
