1. Last bowel movement
Medical · Nursing Abbreviations
Date of the patient's most recent stool, asked on admission and every shift. It identifies constipation, opioid-induced bowel dysfunction or possible obstruction and guides bowel regimens.
Example: LBM 4 days ago per pt; abdomen distended, polyethylene glycol ordered.
Documented as a calendar date rather than "yesterday" so the next shift can tell how long it has been. Many bowel protocols escalate treatment after two or three days without a stool. After abdominal surgery, passing flatus often comes before the first bowel movement and is charted as a sign of returning gut function.
2. Lean body mass
Sports · Fitness and Exercise Abbreviations
Body weight minus fat mass, including muscle, bone, organs and water. Body-composition scans and some calorie formulas use it.
Example: A DEXA scan put my LBM at 142 pounds and body fat at 18 percent.
The Katch-McArdle formula estimates resting metabolism from lean mass rather than total weight. Fat-free mass is a closely related term. Consumer bathroom scales estimate LBM with limited accuracy.
