1. Jackson-Pratt drain
Medical · Nursing Abbreviations
Closed-suction surgical drain made of a flexible tube connected to a squeezable bulb that creates gentle negative pressure, removing fluid and blood from a wound bed. Nurses empty it, record output and recompress the bulb.
Example: JP #1 emptied 35 mL serosanguineous, bulb recompressed, site C/D/I.
Output color is charted as sanguineous (bloody), serosanguineous (pink) or serous (clear yellow); a sudden switch to frank blood or cloudy fluid is reported. Patients are often sent home with a JP and a log sheet. Drains are usually removed once output falls below a surgeon-set threshold, often around 25 to 30 mL a day.
2. Japan
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Japan, capital Tokyo, alpha-3 JPN, uses JP for the .jp domain and the yen trades as JPY. The country's own name is Nihon or Nippon, meaning origin of the sun.
Example: Region-locked games labeled JP will not play on North American consoles.
Japanese is ja, not jp, in language tags, so the locale is written ja-JP. In software and gaming, JP is shorthand for the Japanese version of a product.
3. Justice of the peace
Law & Legal · Court Abbreviations
Local judicial officer who handles minor civil claims, misdemeanors, traffic offenses, warrants and sometimes weddings. In Texas, elected JPs run justice courts in every county; in England and Wales, JPs are unpaid lay magistrates who hear most criminal cases in magistrates' courts.
Example: The tenant was served with an eviction citation from the JP court in Harris County.
The office dates to the Justices of the Peace Act 1361, which gave local gentry power to keep the king's peace. In many US states JPs need not be lawyers. Some states, such as Massachusetts, appoint JPs mainly to perform marriages and administer oaths. In the UK and Commonwealth, JP is written after a magistrate's name.
