1. Medical emergency team
Medical · Hospital Abbreviations
Hospital team summoned to deteriorating patients based on calling criteria such as abnormal vital signs, altered consciousness or staff concern. It is the Australian origin of the rapid response concept.
Example: MET call criteria met: SBP 84, HR 132; team at bedside within 5 minutes.
The MET model was developed at Liverpool Hospital in Sydney in the early 1990s. Calling criteria often include "staff member worried about the patient". In exercise science MET means metabolic equivalent of task, an unrelated measure.
2. Metabolic equivalent of task
Sports · Fitness and Exercise Abbreviations
Unit expressing the energy cost of an activity as a multiple of resting metabolism: sitting quietly is 1 MET, brisk walking about 3 to 4, running at 6 mph about 10. MET-minutes measure total weekly activity.
Example: A 30-minute run at 10 MET adds 300 MET-minutes to your weekly total.
One MET is defined as 3.5 milliliters of oxygen per kilogram per minute. The Compendium of Physical Activities lists MET values for hundreds of activities. Physical activity guidelines are often expressed in MET-minutes per week.
