Example: Quarterly MDS due 11/15; nurse coordinator reviewing ADL coding.

Part of the Resident Assessment Instrument created after the Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987 (OBRA '87); version 3.0 began in October 2010. MDS data drive Medicare skilled nursing facility payment and the quality measures on Care Compare. Each facility employs an MDS coordinator, usually an RN.

2. Myelodysplastic syndrome

Medical · Hematology and Oncology Abbreviations

Group of clonal bone marrow cancers in which blood cells form abnormally and die early, causing low blood counts, fatigue, infections and bleeding. It mainly affects people over 65 and can progress to acute myeloid leukemia.

Example: Macrocytic anemia, ring sideroblasts and SF3B1 mutation: lower-risk MDS, luspatercept started.

Risk is scored with the revised International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS-R) and the molecular IPSS-M, which guide whether to focus on improving blood counts or altering the disease. Hypomethylating agents such as azacitidine and decitabine are standard for higher-risk disease, and allogeneic transplant is the only cure. The 2022 WHO classification renamed them myelodysplastic neoplasms. In long-term care MDS means the Minimum Data Set.
