SFTP stands for SSH File Transfer Protocol, a networking abbreviation.
Transfers and manages files over an encrypted SSH connection on port 22, using one channel for both commands and data. It is the usual secure replacement for FTP on servers, web hosts and automated business file exchanges.
Example: Partners drop the nightly invoice files on our SFTP server using key-based logins.
Usage notes
Despite the name, SFTP is not FTP run through SSH; it is a separate protocol designed by the IETF's SECSH working group as part of SSH-2. It is often confused with FTPS, which is classic FTP wrapped in TLS. Very old documents may use SFTP for the obsolete Simple File Transfer Protocol of RFC 913.
