1. Transport Layer Security

Technology & Computing · Cybersecurity Abbreviations

The cryptographic protocol that encrypts and authenticates data sent over networks, protecting HTTPS websites, email, VPNs and APIs. During a handshake, the client checks the server's certificate and both sides agree on session keys.

Example: The load balancer terminates TLS and forwards plain HTTP to the app servers on the private network.

The IETF released TLS 1.0 in 1999 as the successor to SSL 3.0, followed by 1.1 (2006), 1.2 (2008) and 1.3 (2018). Version 1.3 removed outdated ciphers, made forward secrecy mandatory and cut the handshake to one round trip. TLS 1.0 and 1.1 were formally deprecated in 2021 and are rejected by major browsers. Many people still say SSL when they mean TLS.

2. Tumor lysis syndrome

Medical · Hematology and Oncology Abbreviations

Metabolic emergency caused by rapid breakdown of cancer cells, typically after starting treatment for fast-growing cancers, releasing potassium, phosphate and uric acid into the blood. It can cause kidney failure, dangerous heart rhythms and seizures.

Example: Day 1 of chemo for Burkitt lymphoma: K 6.4, phosphate 8.2, uric acid 14: TLS, rasburicase and nephrology consult.

The Cairo-Bishop criteria (2004) define laboratory and clinical TLS. High-risk settings include Burkitt lymphoma, acute leukemias with high white counts, bulky lymphoma and starting venetoclax in CLL. Prevention relies on aggressive hydration and uric acid control with allopurinol or rasburicase; rasburicase is contraindicated in G6PD deficiency because it can cause severe hemolysis.
