TMA stands for Thrombotic microangiopathy, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.

Umbrella term for disorders in which small blood vessels are damaged and blocked by clots, producing microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, low platelets and organ injury, especially to the kidneys and brain. It includes TTP, hemolytic uremic syndrome and many secondary forms.

Example: Post-transplant TMA with rising creatinine, schistocytes and hypertension; tacrolimus level checked.

Usage notes

Secondary causes include drugs (calcineurin inhibitors, gemcitabine, quinine), malignant hypertension, pregnancy complications such as HELLP, autoimmune disease and stem cell transplantation. Complement-mediated (atypical) HUS is treated with complement inhibitors such as eculizumab. Kidney biopsy shows characteristic vessel changes when the diagnosis is unclear.
