IETF stands for Internet Engineering Task Force, a networking abbreviation.

The open standards body that develops most core internet protocols, including TCP/IP, HTTP, TLS and DNS, through working groups that anyone can join. Its specifications are published as RFCs.

Example: The draft is still in the IETF working group, so expect the header format to change.

Usage notes

First met in January 1986 with 21 attendees. It has no formal membership and works by "rough consensus and running code", a phrase attributed to David Clark. Meetings rotate between continents three times a year, and participants sometimes hum rather than vote to gauge agreement. The IETF operates under the umbrella of the Internet Society.
