SNMP stands for Simple Network Management Protocol, a networking abbreviation.
Monitors and manages network devices such as routers, switches, printers and UPS units by reading counters and status values from them and receiving alerts called traps. Monitoring tools poll SNMP to graph bandwidth, errors and temperatures.
Example: The monitoring server polls every switch via SNMP each minute for interface errors.
Usage notes
First defined in 1988 in RFCs 1065 to 1067. Values are organized in a Management Information Base (MIB) and addressed by numeric object identifiers. SNMPv1 and v2c authenticate with plain-text "community strings", often left at the default "public", so SNMPv3, which adds encryption and user accounts, is recommended. Agents listen on UDP port 161 and traps go to port 162.
