FQDN stands for Fully qualified domain name, a networking abbreviation.
A complete domain name that specifies a host's exact place in the DNS hierarchy, such as mail.example.com, including every label up to the top-level domain. Strictly it ends with a trailing dot representing the root.
Example: Enter the server's FQDN, not just its short hostname, in the certificate request.
Usage notes
Short names like "mail" work only within a local search domain, while an FQDN resolves anywhere. TLS certificates must list FQDNs or wildcard names, and public certificate authorities stopped issuing certificates for internal short names in the mid-2010s. The trailing dot, as in "example.com.", is omitted in everyday use but matters in DNS zone files.
