DMZ stands for Demilitarized zone, a military term abbreviation also used in technology.
Area in which military forces and installations are prohibited by agreement, usually a buffer between hostile states. The best-known example is the Korean DMZ separating North and South Korea since the 1953 armistice.
Example: Soldiers at the DMZ watched North Korean guards across the line at Panmunjom.
Usage notes
The Korean DMZ is about 250 kilometers long and roughly 4 kilometers wide. Its long isolation has turned it into an unexpected wildlife refuge. In computer networking, a DMZ is a buffer network between an internal network and the internet.
