Diversion program, best known in New Jersey, that lets eligible defendants, usually first offenders, avoid prosecution by completing a period of supervision and conditions such as counseling or community service. Charges are dismissed on successful completion.
Example: Her lawyer applied for PTI, and the prosecutor consented, so the shoplifting charge will be dismissed after a year.
New Jersey's program runs under court rule and statute, admission generally requires the prosecutor's consent, and a defendant may enter only once. South Carolina, Florida and other states operate similar programs under names such as pretrial diversion. Completing PTI usually allows the arrest record to be expunged.
