1. Presentence report

Report prepared by a US probation officer before federal sentencing that calculates the advisory Sentencing Guidelines range and describes the offense conduct, criminal history, personal background and finances. It is the central document at a federal sentencing hearing.
Example: Defense counsel objected to the PSR's two-level enhancement for possession of a firearm.
Under Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 32, the PSR must be disclosed at least 35 days before sentencing, and the parties have 14 days to object. The Bureau of Prisons later uses it to set security classification and program eligibility. It is treated as confidential and is generally not part of the public file.
