1. Original gangster

Texting & Internet Slang · Gen Z Slang Abbreviations

Originally hip-hop slang for a respected veteran gang member, now used for anyone or anything original, authentic or long-standing, as in "OG fans," "the OG recipe" or "she's an OG."

Example: The OG iPhone still looks surprisingly good next to the new ones.

Rooted in 1980s Los Angeles street slang and popularized by Ice-T's 1991 album "O.G. Original Gangster." Today it usually means simply "original" or "veteran," with no criminal connotation, and gamers prize "OG skins" from early seasons. Positive and widely understood across ages.

2. Own goal

Sports · Soccer (Association Football) Abbreviations

Goal that a player accidentally scores into his or her own net, credited to the opposing team. It appears in match reports as "(OG)" beside the defender's name.

Example: Scorers: Kane 23', Dias 67' (OG).

Richard Dunne holds the Premier League record with ten own goals. Scorers record an own goal only when the ball was going wide or the defender's touch was decisive; deflected shots on target are usually credited to the shooter. Outside soccer, OG is slang for "original gangster".

3. Open Graph (protocol)

Technology & Computing · Internet & Web Abbreviations

A set of meta tags, such as og:title, og:description and og:image, that control how a web page looks when shared as a link preview on social media and messaging apps. Facebook created the protocol, and LinkedIn, Slack and Discord also read it.

Example: The link preview shows the wrong picture because the page's OG image is outdated.

Introduced by Facebook in April 2010. Platforms cache preview data, so changes may require a forced refresh with tools such as Facebook's Sharing Debugger. X (formerly Twitter) has its own "twitter:" card tags but falls back to Open Graph. In slang, OG means "original gangster", an entirely separate meaning.

4. Offensive guard

Sports · American Football Abbreviations

Interior lineman who lines up between the center and a tackle on each side, usually listed as LG and RG. Guards block defensive tackles, pull across the formation on running plays and keep pressure off the quarterback up the middle.

Example: The Steelers moved their rookie OG from right guard to left guard during camp.

Guards are generally shorter and stronger than tackles. A "pulling guard" leaves his spot at the snap to lead the way for a runner on the opposite side. Outside football, OG is slang for "original gangster", meaning a veteran or original member of a group.

5. Orogastric

Medical · Medication Route Abbreviations

Tube passed through the mouth into the stomach to give medicines and feeds or to decompress the stomach. It is preferred over a nasal tube in intubated adults, in newborns, who breathe mainly through the nose, and in patients with facial or skull-base fractures.

Example: OG tube to low intermittent suction; meds via OG, flush with 30 mL water.

Medications given through any gastric tube must be liquid or crushable; extended-release, enteric-coated and sublingual products generally cannot be crushed, as listed in ISMP's "Do Not Crush" list. Tube placement is confirmed on X-ray before first use.

6. Oganesson (Og)

Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations

Oganesson (atomic number 118) is the heaviest element yet made and the last in the seventh row of the periodic table. Although it falls in group 18 with the noble gases, calculations suggest it may be a solid and more reactive than its neighbors. Only a handful of atoms have been detected.

Example: With 118 protons, Og completes the seventh period of the periodic table as drawn today.

A Dubna-Livermore team produced it by bombarding californium-249 with calcium-48, reporting the first atoms in 2002 and confirming them in 2006. The name honors Russian-Armenian physicist Yuri Oganessian, a pioneer of superheavy element research, making him the second living person, after Glenn Seaborg, to have an element named after him. The -on ending matches the noble gases neon, argon, krypton and xenon.
