Rg stands for Roentgenium, a chemical element abbreviation.
Roentgenium (element 111) is a synthetic element in group 11, below copper, silver and gold, though its isotopes vanish too quickly for chemists to test whether it behaves like a noble metal. It was created at GSI Darmstadt in December 1994 by fusing bismuth and nickel nuclei.
Example: Theory predicts that Rg, like gold, should resist oxidation, but no experiment has confirmed it.
Usage notes
Sigurd Hofmann's group detected three atoms in its first experiment. The name, approved in 2004, honors Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, who discovered X-rays in 1895 and received the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901. Before naming it carried the systematic placeholder unununium (Uuu).
