1. Ontario Provincial Police
Government & Politics · Police Abbreviations
Provincial police force of Ontario, Canada, which patrols provincial highways and provides policing to many smaller communities and First Nations without their own forces.
Example: OPP closed Highway 401 eastbound after a multi-vehicle collision in the fog.
Founded in 1909. The OPP is one of the largest police services in North America. Quebec's equivalent is the Sûreté du Québec, while most other provinces contract the RCMP for provincial policing.
2. Opposition or opponent (Opp)
Texting & Internet Slang · Gen Z Slang Abbreviations
Slang for an enemy, rival or anyone working against the speaker, usually plural as "opps." Born in drill music and hip-hop, it is now used jokingly by Gen Z for haters or critics.
Example: The opps are watching my stories again, I see you.
In Chicago and UK drill music, "opps" refers to rival gangs, a serious and sometimes violent context. Online it has been diluted into a joke for anyone who dislikes the speaker, such as a strict teacher or an ex. Informal.
3. Opposite (opp.)
Writing & Everyday · Everyday Abbreviations
Shortens "opposite" in directions, notes and dictionary entries, as in "opp. the station" or "opp. of hot." British addresses and directions use it often.
Example: The pharmacy is opp. the train station, next to the post office.
Dictionaries sometimes use opp. to introduce antonyms, much like ant. In sports statistics, "opp." can mean "opponent," as in "points allowed to opp." British signs and guidebooks may write it without a period.
