OUI stands for Operating under the influence, a police abbreviation.

Name for the impaired driving offense in Massachusetts and Maine. Like OWI, the word "operating" can include situations where a person controls a vehicle without driving it.

Example: Massachusetts drivers convicted of a first OUI may enter an alcohol education program to shorten the license suspension.

Usage notes

Massachusetts' "Melanie's Law" of 2005 toughened penalties for repeat offenders and required ignition interlocks. Some sources write OUIL (operating under the influence of liquor). The offense is the same as DUI or DWI elsewhere.
